Description: Operating in the White Mountains of Arizona and the Gila area of New Mexico for limited draw rifle and archery elk hunting opportunities. This area is known to hold some of the biggest bulls in the United States and it is reasonable to expect to take bulls from 310 to 350 inches with bulls taken over 370 every year.
Draw odds vary depending on the Unit and weapon choice, so it may take multiple years in order to secure a tag. Arizona and New Mexico are the leaders in setting aside limited draw trophy areas for big game. With limited hunting pressure, these animals can mature to full trophy potential.
The terrain consists mountains and canyons, pine into Juniper countryside with elevations from 6500 to 8000 feet. The countryside is very glassible and hunts are conducted spot and stalk utilizing various methods of transportation depending on where the bulls are located. On a physical scale from 1-10 we would rate it at a 5 or 6.
For archery hunts you will typically go by foot and 4x4s, and sometimes pack in on horseback to spike tent camps if the bulls are deep. Methods used include calling, stalking, tree stands or ground blinds over water holes or wallows. For rifle hunts you’ll be catching the tail end of the rut with some bugling still going on. This will also be a spot and stalk hunt with lots of glassing to find your bull.
Archery success rates average around 50% kill with 100% shooting opportunities. Rifle is near 100% success in most years.
Accommodations: Lodge or first class wall tent camp with a full time cook and showers. It is possible that clients will spike it out if the bulls are deep and the client is willing.
Transportation/Getting there: Hunters can fly or drive to camp. If flying hunters will fly to either Albuquerque, Tuscon, or Phoenix, and rent a vehicle to camp. Airport pickup is available for an additional fee.
